Hawks fly into Weyburn looking for win over Wings

Nipawin will embark on a two-game road trip beginning Tuesday in Weyburn when they face the Red Wings.

The Hawks will look to snap a five-game winless skid in their fourth and final meeting of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season with Weyburn. Nipawin has won two of the games between the teams this year. Beginning the week six points out of the last SJHL playoff spot, head coach Tad Kozun said the team needs to start the week on a positive note.

“It all starts with tonight, but as much as you want to look the full game tonight you just want to look at the first period, or even the guys’ first shift. Let’s make sure the guys are ready on their first shift then let’s continue to roll from there,” Kozun said.

Nipawin was last in action on Saturday falling in Melfort by the score of 3-1. Prior to that the club was ousted 5-1 in Kindersley and lost twice to the La Ronge Ice Wolves. Their last point came in a spirited 3-2 shootout loss to the Estevan Bruins, the team they will face on the road Wednesday. Kozun said the team needs to find that spark from a couple weeks ago.

“I think we took step forward on the way we can play and just need a little more finish around the net. We worked on that yesterday at practice. We just need to make sure we are ready to go, ready to compete, and if we bring that same effort good things are going to happen,” he added.

The Red Wings are 12th in the SJHL standings and the lone team likely outside the playoff picture. The club has allowed a league worst 172 goals against. Kozun is hoping a productive night offensively can help the Hawks sputtering offence that has generated 96 goals, the lowest in the league.

“You never know what’s going to go in or what it could deflect off of,” Kozun said. “As long as it’s going towards the net there is a chance it goes in the back of it. If you don’t get it to the net there’s no chance and the transition is going the other way.”

Faceoff Tuesday is at 7:30 p.m.

The Hawks will travel to Humboldt to meet the Broncos on Saturday before returning to the Centennial Arena on Sunday for a crucial match up with the Melville Millionaires.

All three road games can be heard on Saskatchewan’s Beach Radio.

Wednesday’s contest against the Bruins begins at 7 p.m. and Saturday’s game from the Elgar Petersen Arena is also a 7:30 p.m. start.
