Lloydminster receives Alberta approval for annexation, waiting for Saskatchewan

Pending buy-in from Saskatchewan, the Border City is going to get bigger.

The City of Lloydminster received approval from the Government of Alberta on Jan. 26 to annex lands from the County of Vermillion River. This will add 23.5 quarter sections of land along the northern, western and southern outskirts of the city on the Alberta side of the border.

In a media release, Mayor Gerald Aalbers acknowledged the work of council and administration, both current and past, to address the city’s land issue. This move is designed to create a balanced economy, attract new investments and residents, maintain and expand services and ensure a sustainable region.

“An annexation of this magnitude is enormously complex, requiring years of discussion, research and strategic planning,” he said. “This will help us provide attractive options for new business and housing developments.”

Over almost 20 years, significant growth has depleted Lloydminster’s existing land supply. The anticipation of this shortage prompted introductory annexation discussions between the city and county dating back to 2011.

“Over the past decade, our community has seen significant residential and non-residential growth, and we’ve begun to see a shortage of developable acres,” Aalbers said. “The ability to grow and develop is critical to Lloydminster’s long-term social and economic sustainability.”

The city has a detailed annexation transition plan to help address the questions of those most directly affected by the proposed annexation, which doesn’t change ownership rights. Available on their website in the near future, it includes governance, municipal services, properties, taxes and others.

To finalize the decision, the Government of Saskatchewan must also grant a complimentary order, which is anticipated in the near future.
