Hawks soar over Red Wings in Weyburn
The Nipawin Hawks scored early and often in a 5-0 win over the Weyburn Red Wings on Tuesday night at Crescent Point Place.
Vying to snap a five-game winless skid, the Hawks scored 36 seconds into the game, 2:23 into the first period, and again at the 7:39 mark of the opening period to build a huge lead and coast to the win. Joel Mabin notched his ninth of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season, Carson Dobson picked up his eight, and Bryden Kiesman scored his first goal for Nipawin after coming over in a trade on Jan. 10. He said the win was an important one for the team.
“I would agree with that, we’ve been down here for a few games, but it feels good to get a win under our belt and get things rolling,” Kiesman told northeastNOW after the game.
Alex Johnson scored his sixth goal of the season late in the first period as the Hawks put up their most prolific 20 minutes of the entire SJHL season. Kiesman added that the players mindsets change when you jump out to a quick, commanding lead.
