Hawks soar over Red Wings in Weyburn

The Nipawin Hawks scored early and often in a 5-0 win over the Weyburn Red Wings on Tuesday night at Crescent Point Place.

Vying to snap a five-game winless skid, the Hawks scored 36 seconds into the game, 2:23 into the first period, and again at the 7:39 mark of the opening period to build a huge lead and coast to the win. Joel Mabin notched his ninth of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season, Carson Dobson picked up his eight, and Bryden Kiesman scored his first goal for Nipawin after coming over in a trade on Jan. 10. He said the win was an important one for the team.

“I would agree with that, we’ve been down here for a few games, but it feels good to get a win under our belt and get things rolling,” Kiesman told northeastNOW after the game.

Alex Johnson scored his sixth goal of the season late in the first period as the Hawks put up their most prolific 20 minutes of the entire SJHL season. Kiesman added that the players mindsets change when you jump out to a quick, commanding lead.

“Getting down really deflates everyone, including myself,” he said. “There’s been negativity on those losing days, but it feels a lot better on the bench in this atmosphere. Everyone is so much happier and motivated to get that win.”

The offensive output slowed after the first, the Hawks waited until just passed the three-minute mark in the third period to cap the scoring with Kye Whillans fourth goal of the SJHL campaign.

Kiesman added an assist on Mabin’s game winning goal in the first period. The 19-year-old Winnipeg product said finally scoring in his sixth game with the Hawks felt good.

“It feels great to get the monkey off the back, but it was a beautiful feed by Mabes [Mabin] to help me be able to put that one in the back of the net. I feel better,” he said.

Chase Hamm earned his fourth shutout of the season making 29 saves. Weyburn starter Jackson Fellner allowed three goals on eight shots before being pulled. Dazza Mitchell allowed two goals on 20 shots in relief.

The Hawks will look to build off the win with a stop in Estevan Wednesday. Faceoff is 7 p.m., the game will be broadcasted on Saskatchewan’s Beach Radio beginning at 6:45 p.m.
