Marburg named community ambassador for the Broncos

It was RBC Game Night in Humboldt as they took on the Battlefords North Stars on Tuesday night.

It was also a night to celebrate as RBC and the SJHL announced their Humboldt Broncos’ Community Ambassador with their year’s representative being forward, Sam Marburg. Marburg came to Humboldt for the abbreviated 2020-2021 season from North Vancouver, B.C. before coming back for their year’s full season.

Marburg told northeastNOW he was “stoked” to be chosen for this big honour.

“I’m glad to be able to represent my team, especially the organization that I’m a part of it, it means a lot to me.”

A donation will be made in Marburg’s honour to a charity of his choice.

With fellow teammates attending the Humboldt Collegiate Institute, Marburg said his donation will go to their breakfast program at the school.

“I heard that they weren’t able to get some of the funding that they had before…I think most of the kids in Humboldt are going there, too. So just with the limited amount of funds available, I thought that that’d be able to impact the most amount of people.”

The team does volunteer work in different areas around the city, including walking dogs at the SPCA, shoveling snow for residents, and bagging groceries at Sobeys.

Marburg’s favourite place to donate his time has been helping out with the recreation hockey program.

“I love hanging out with the kids and skating around with them and seeing their smiles and stuff like that. It’s so fun, especially when they’re laughing and enjoying themselves and they want to get better and learn new things and we’re able to help them do that.”

The Humboldt Broncos are proud of the honour that Marburg has received. Head coach Scott Barney recognizes the work that Marburg has put into the community, saying, “Sam is a tremendous ambassador for the community and really enjoys giving back when he’s able to. Great to see him rewarded with the time and effort he puts into the Humboldt community.”

A player from each SJHL team will be chosen as the program, “recognizes players who are making a difference by giving back to their community. Each player has displayed outstanding citizenship and sportsmanship both on and off the ice and a commitment to volunteerism,” according to the SJHL website.

One representative will be chosen at the end of the regular season as the recipient of the Community Ambassador Award and will have the opportunity to make an even bigger donation within their community.
