Fundraising for Telemiracle 46, Melfort Kinettes bring back curling fun spiel

In one month, Kinsmen and Kinette groups in Saskatchewan will present their fundraising totals for Telemiracle.

The COVID-19 pandemic has posed many challenges when it comes to raising funds, but some events are able to return this year with some slight changes.

The Melfort Kinettes and the Melfort Curling Club are hosting their Telemiracle ladies’ fun spiel for the second time on Feb. 19.

“We hosted this event in February 2020, and it was such a huge success, we knew we needed to do it again,” Committee member and Kinette Shannon Marshall said. “We had 12 teams of ladies on the ice and brought in around $2,500 with just this event and fun doesn’t even begin to describe it.”

The event will follow all current public health restrictions which are already in place at the curling rink. Everyone participating will need to show proof of double vaccination and wear a mask while in the lounge.

“The curling games are for the ladies, but the lounge is open to both men and women who are not registered for curling but would like to come watch, hang out and socialize, and help with bringing in funds for Telemiracle 46,” Marshall said.

The theme for this year is Olympics and there will be prizes for the best dressed team as well as raffle items and silent auction for everyone to take advantage of throughout the evening.

An addition to the event this year, the Kinettes are bring back their Melfort famous Kin curly fries that people were familiar with during the fair.

“We did do appetizers the last time we hosted this, but we thought since no one has been able to enjoy our delicious curly fries in nearly three years, it was time,” Marshall said.

Registrations are open for the spiel that is expected to fill up quite quickly by calling or texting Angie at 306-281-2843 or Marshall at 306-921-7706.

“We also do need to give a great big shoutout to the Melfort Curling Club. They donate the ice, lounge, and kitchen so every bit of money we bring in during the event goes directly to Telemiracle,” Marshall said.

The fun spiel is just one of the many events for the telethon in the northeast this year.

On Feb. 17, the Melfort Kinettes and the Prairie North Coop are also hosting a chicken pot pie lunch.

Orders for pies and buns can be made by emailing melfortkinettesservice@gmail.com prior to Feb. 11. Lunch delivery is from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and work places are encouraged to submit orders as a group.

The Kinettes will also be serving a chilli lunch at the Sask Rampage snow pitch tournament this weekend at the Melfort Ag Society. The Melfort Kinsmen will be serving a steak supper to snow pitch players.

Last year, the Melfort Kin clubs presented over $22,000 to the Telemiracle 45 total of over $5 million.

Elsewhere, the St. Brieux Kin Club has partnered with Garden Girl Custom Gardening to sell garden seed packages to coincide with the Telemiracle 46 theme of ‘Rooted in Saskatchewan’. An order form can be found on their Facebook page.

The St. Brieux school is also selling Telemiracle helping hands to add to the community total that will be presented by the St. Brieux Kin Club.

Local performer Ellie Murray is also raising funds to present to Telemiracle during her performance on the show.

Humboldt’s Hannah Grace will also be collecting donations to take to the telethon.

Murray is selling raffle tickets for two gift baskets worth over $200 of items from local businesses. Tickets are located at Penny’s Soup and Sandwich in the Melfort Mall and at Koffee Grounds. Tickets will be available until March 1.

Telemiracle 46 takes place on March 5–6 in Regina.
