Families in the Meota area will have an opportunity to get outdoors while still following COVID-19 restrictions at this upcoming outdoor event.

Meota will have a Winter Family Festival running on Feb. 12 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Meota’s Outdoor Rink on Third Street East.

The event is being organized by the Meota And District Recreation Association (Meota ADRA) non-profit group.

Chair Sherry Bru-Doom said while the provincial holiday in February falls later in the month, they thought it would be better to hold the event now rather than waiting.

“We don’t do anything on Family Day weekend because a lot of families go away…,so that’s why we decided to do it before [instead],” she said.

The festival will include sleigh rides, skating, a scavenger hunt, maple syrup snow candy making, as well as hot dogs and hot chocolate to enjoy.

Bru-Doom said the community has not had a winter festival in decades, so with the COVID-19 situation putting a damper on many activities the group believed having an outdoor event over the winter would be a great way for families to get together safety.

She added the weather is expected to be not too cold on the weekend as an added bonus to draw people to the event.

“If it’s a good turnout and it’s well received we probably will do it more often,” Bru-Doom said.

The festival also aligns with a curling bonspiel called the Meota Broom For 2 Sturling Spiel happening at the Meota Curling Club the same day.

Derek Welford, president of the Meota Curling Club and a member of the Meota ADRA, said the winter festival is a good way to add more fun activities to bring families together.

“Everyone is coming downtown anyway, they can either come curl, or if they have their kids [the festival] is something to do at the same time basically,” he said. “They are both right beside each other.”

Welford said the curling bonspiel event, running from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., has 12 teams entered so it should be exciting day for everyone.
