North Stars, Terriers set to clash in Tuesday night matchup

Feb 8, 2022 | 4:00 PM

The Battlefords North Stars will return to action Tuesday night on home ice as the team welcomes the Yorkton Terriers to town.

Team outlook

The Stars enter play fifth overall in the league standings with a 25-11-5 record, giving them 55 points this season. Winner of four of their last five, the team will be looking to get back on the winning track after falling 4-2 to La Ronge on Saturday.

The Terriers will also be searching for a return to the win column as the team sits seventh overall at 20-20-5 this season, but have lost three in a row including a recent 5-4 loss to Estevan on Saturday night on home ice.

Players to watch

It will be a milestone night in North Battleford as Meadow Lake local, Dylan Esau, will play his 150th career SJHL game.

The lone active member from the Stars’ 2019 SJHL championship team in 2019, Esau is the longest tenured Star, and becomes just the fifth player to hit the 150-game plateau with the organization over the last three years.

“I think I just take away all the memories with all my teammates,” Esau said, when asked what stands out the most over his time with the team. “I’ve been fortunate to play with a lot of great guys and a lot of great teams; winning teams and winning [a] championship, so it’s been a nice ride.”

Esau picked up a goal in the Stars’ 5-3 win over Melfort over the weekend, and currently sits second in team scoring with 35 points in 40 games this year.

At the other end, Yorkton’s Kishaun Gervais is coming off a two-goal performance Saturday against Estevan. The diminutive speedster sits second in Terriers’ scoring this year – and first in points per-game – with 29 points in 35 games (0.83 points per-contest).

Special teams

The North Stars sit second overall on the power play this year with their man-advantage clicking at just under 24 percent. Yorkton’s is 10th overall at 12 percent.

The Terriers do hold the edge on the penalty kill, however, with an 86 percent success rate (third) to the Stars’ 78 percent (ninth).

Goaltending

Michael Harroch is expected to get the start between the pipes for the Stars Tuesday. The product of North Vancouver, B.C., has posted a 12-3-3 record this year, along with a 2.79 goals-against average and .924 save percentage.

Yorkton are likely to call on Kael DePape at the other end. DePape is 16-13-4, with a 2.35 goals-against average and .915 save percentage.

The NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast will be available on 1050 CJNB. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 7 p.m. with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
