Stars fall to Terriers 3-2 in OT heartbreaker

Feb 9, 2022 | 12:06 AM

Yorkton Terriers forward, Kishaun Gervais scored 2:40 into the extra frame, to lead his team to a 3-2 overtime win over the Battlefords North Stars Tuesday night in North Battleford.

Steven Kesslering and Emmett Wurst scored for the Stars in the loss, while goaltender, Michael Harroch stopped 33 of 36 shots-against – including 15/16 in the first period alone – to keep his team right there throughout the evening.

Terriers captain, Erik Boers opened the scoring just over two minutes into the first period, on his 11th of the year, making it 1-0 Terriers early; a lead they would take to the first intermission.

Midway through the second, Kesslering’s 18th tied the contest, on a breakaway goal slipped between the pads of Terriers’ goalie, Tresor Wotton, to knot the score 1-1.

However the tie was short-lived, as just 3:03 later, Steven Norum added his 10th for the Terriers on a scoop-shot high short-side from beside the net, to make it 2-1 Yorkton.

Outside of the single goal each, the second period remained scoreless, with the Stars putting 17 shots of their own on-goal, with all but the single stopped by Wotton.

The third period also remained scoreless, until the final 45 seconds, when Wurst tipped home a shot from the point from blue liner, Tynan Ewart. Serving as Wurst’s 10th of the year, the tally made it 2-2, forcing overtime, to secure each team at least a single point in the standings.

Gervais’ OT winner came off the rush, on a quick backhand shot, perfectly placed over the goalie’s shoulder from the left side of the slot.

With the overtime loss, the Stars are now 25-11-6 this season, and sit just a single point back of Melfort for fourth overall, despite still holding four games in-hand.

The team will look to snap their two-game slide this weekend when they play the Flin Flon Bombers for the first time this year, for back-to-backs Friday and Saturday in Flin Flon.

The NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcasts will be available on 1050 CJNB. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 7 p.m. both nights, with puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m.
