Fight for points and first place continues for Broncos

With another win under their hockey pads, the Humboldt Broncos earned some crucial points last night against the Notre Dame Hounds on home ice.

Also to earn some valuable points was Humboldt forward Connor McGrath with two more goals in the books.

The 19-year-old LeRoy, Sask. original has consistently topped the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League scoring leaderboard this season and now has 66 total points, 26 goals and 40 assists, in 46 games. McGrath is also leading his team in assists and second in goals only to fellow forward, Alec Saretzky.

Despite the stellar performance this year, McGrath said he only cares about scoring points for the team.

“We’re close to winning a championship and we’re all set on winning that. It’d be really nice to bring the championship back to Humboldt.”

The Broncos are currently first in the Global Ag Risk Solutions division and fell to second in the SJHL league after the Estevan Bruins had some important wins last week. The rival teams both have 72 points but the Bruins currently have their total in two less games.

As the season draws to a close, McGrath said the team will be ready for whatever comes their way.

Also to light up the scoreboard at the Elgar Petersen Arena last night was Sam Marburg, scoring his seventh of the season in the second to strike first for the Broncos. Notre Dames’ Antoine Saint-Onge would be the only one to beat Broncos goalie Rayce Ramsay with the clock ticking down on a 3-1 win for the green and gold.

The Broncos will now hit the road for a game at the Centennial Arena against the Nipawin Hawks on Friday night. The 11th place Hawks are 14-26-0-6 this season and are looking for some valuable points themselves to sneak into that last playoff spot before the season wraps up.

Head coach, Scott Barney, knows the team is up for a fight.

“They play pretty hard in the rink. They got a young team there, obviously, under the new coach and I believe they’re trending in the right direction.”
