Hawks fall short versus Broncos

Although the score was a lot closer than last Saturday’s game in Humboldt, the Nipawin Hawks still came out with the loss against the Broncos at home on Friday.

The Hawks scored the only goal of the first period at the Centennial Arena, but Humboldt bounced back in the second scoring twice and hung on to a 2-1 victory.

Christian Albertson scored his team-leading 13th goal for the Hawks in the loss, he said the team was happier with their effort but the loss still stung.

“I would say it’s pretty disappointing right now and I feel like lots of the guys feel the same way,” the 20-year-old said after the game. “I would say we definitely improved since the last time we played them but it kind of sucks right now.”

After Connor McGrath and Braiden Koran gave the Broncos the lead the physical play of the game picked up. Humboldt looked poised to pull away in the game, but the Hawks continued to play hard and match Humboldt’s intensity. Albertson said Nipawin can be a dangerous team, but consistency is still a concern.

“I feel like when we play physical lots of teams are scared of us. If we keep playing physical that gets the boys going more, we work harder, get pucks in deep, and do our jobs,” Albertson added.

Nipawin got 25 saves from goaltender Chase Hamm in the loss, while Rayce Ramsay continued his potentially Most Valuable Player season with 21 stops on route to his Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) best 34th victory.

The Hawks will now prepare for Sunday’s home game against the Yorkton Terriers. This is a make-up game for a previously scheduled contest. Albertson said the team will regroup following the Humboldt game and turn their attention to the Terriers.

“We will start preparing tomorrow, tonight we will think about this one for a bit more, once it turns to midnight we will refocus and get ready for Sunday,” he said.

Faceoff is 4:30 p.m. at the Centennial Arena.
