North Stars will look for spirited response in rematch with Bombers

Feb 12, 2022 | 2:00 PM

After Friday’s 4-0 defeat, the Battlefords North Stars will be looking for a much better start in Saturday’s rematch against the Flin Flon Bombers.

The North Stars couldn’t shake their bus legs as they were behind 2-0 just 4:22 into the game and 3-0 after the opening period. But after a chance to break down the game and get a little rest, the North Stars will look to make a statement in Saturday’s rematch.

The Bombers remain the leaders of the SJHL Sherwood Division with a 30-12-2-1 record and are 6-2-2-0 in their last 10 games. The North Stars are still in second in the Global Ag Risk Solutions Division and are not far behind the Bombers with a 25-12-5-1 record.

Getting the offence going again

The North Stars have been consistent for most of the season in being able to score goals, but that hasn’t been the case in the past three games. After Friday’s shutout defeat to the Bombers, the North Stars have scored four goals in their last three games (3-2 overtime defeat to the Yorkton Terriers on Tuesday, 4-2 loss to the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Feb. 5).

Special teams

The North Stars had two power plays in Friday’s game and were unable to convert on either attempt. They were 4-5 on the penalty kill, but the Bombers’ first goal of the game came shortly after a power play expired and the North Stars couldn’t clear the zone.

In the crease

Lowen Kenyon got the start for the North Stars and made 35 saves on 39 shots. The rookie’s stat line for his first season is impressive with a .933 save percentage, 2.16 goals-against average, and a 4-2-1 record.

Bombers goaltender Cal Schell struggled to climb the ladder to get to the press box and do a postgame interview with local media — it was the only thing he seemed to struggle with on Friday. Schell made 36 saves, many of the acrobatic and desperate nature, to keep the North Stars off the score sheet.
