Proof of vaccine requirements end across Saskatchewan

As public health restrictions lift across the province, some residents are left wondering how changes are coming into effect.

As of Feb. 14 proof of vaccination is no longer required to enter some businesses and other public places, this includes local schools.

“Regarding the public health measures in Saskatchewan, NESD will no longer require proof of vaccination or a negative test, from its staff as well as visitors to any of its facilities,” Don Rempel, director of Education North East School Division (NESD), told northeastNOW.

Although masks are still required until the end of the month, Rempel added that there is no pressure on students to remove their masks.

“NESD will continue to be a mask-friendly environment. The division recommends continued mask use for as long as individuals feel that it’s necessary based on their own personal health risk factors.”

The division will be receiving an updated safe school plan. This will help promote safe attendance, transportation, classrooms and safe school activities.

For parents wanting more information, you can find more information on the NESD website.

Local businesses across the community are also feeling the effects of the mandates.

Cam Lee, executive director of the Melfort Trade Alliance Chamber of Commerce (MTACC) said the chamber members are supportive of any movement that will help local businesses succeed.

“Safety is paramount for everyone. But, you know, it’s been a tough few years for local businesses and we hope that there’s kind of light at the end of the tunnel.”

Although restrictions were just lifted, Lee is hopeful that the community will come together and shares their support during this transition.

“I hope that we continue to kind of navigate those waters together. We can move forward together and with the same goal in mind to get through COVID, and continue on the other side.”
