NLSD directed to end proof of vaccination, mask restrictions

The Northern Lights School Division (NLSD) will need to follow orders from the provincial government to remove vaccination requirements and masking.

In a letter sent to Saskatchewan school division board chairpersons on Feb. 11, Minister of Education Dustin Duncan states he directs boards of education or conseil scolaire to remove any requirements for proof of vaccination or a negative test for persons attending its schools effective Feb. 14 and must not implement further requirements.

It notes proof of vaccination or negative tests for employees remains within the discretion of the employer.

“Further, I hereby direct that a board of education or conseil scolaire must remove any requirement for persons attending at its schools to wear masks effective Feb. 28 and must not implement further requirements,” the ministry’s letter added.

While face coverings will no longer be required Feb. 28, the letters stated schools should encourage mask use while respecting individual choices regarding masks based on one’s own risk assessment.

In a letter issued Feb. 11 by the NLSD, it explained the division’s COVID-19 School Plan 2022 remains in place, as well its administrative procedure regarding proof of vaccination and testing.

“The school division requirements regarding wearing masks and other COVID-related precautions are described in our school division’s COVID-19 School Plan 2022 and must be observed by all students and staff,” the letter notes. “This will be reassessed on Feb. 28.”
