Vikings junior boys cap season with district gold

It was another undefeated tournament for the North Battleford Comprehensive High School (NBCHS) junior boys basketball team, as the Vikings boys capped their season with a Battle West district championship in their home gym, Monday.

Topping Hafford 79-40 to open the tournament with a bang, the junior boys then showed grit to get the job done in the gold medal contest, as the team pulled out a clutch 58-55 win over Unity to top the podium.

Head coach of the junior boys, Jeff Gibson said it was great to see the whole team contribute, and play their best at the most important time.

“With about 38 seconds to go we were up by three and really defended well on our way to ultimately getting the win,” Gibson said. “It was a really close game and a hard-fought battle, so I’m really proud of our guys. We had a really deep team this year, and they really played well.”

The Vikings junior boys’ gold medal finish serves as the exclamation point on a season that saw the team put on a dominant display, posting a 12-1 record total, on the year.

Featuring just a single Grade 8 on the team this year, with the rest Grade 9s, largely destined for the senior team next year, the Vikings basketball program looks to be in good hands moving forward.

Also at Districts, JPII topped Hafford in the bronze medal game, 78-34 to claim bronze.
