North Stars continue roll with 7-1 win in Weyburn

Feb 17, 2022 | 2:39 AM

The Battlefords North Stars made it a perfect 2-0 start to their three-games in three nights road swing this week, topping the Red Wings 7-1 in Weyburn Wednesday.

Six different North Stars scored for the team in the win, as Ryland McNinch (two goals, one assist) and Zane Florence (one goal, two assists) led the way for the team on the night, while Jake Southgate, Colby Bear, Emmett Wurst and Dace Prymak also added a goal each in the victory.

Between the pipes, Austin Schwab stopped 30 of 31 shots against to backstop the Stars to victory; and at the other end, Weyburn’s Jackson Fellner stopped 41 of 48, to keep his team in the contest through the first 40 minutes.

Wings’ forward, Cooper Chisholm opened the scoring with his fourth of the season, in what would end up serving as his team’s lone goal on the night. Coming at the 7:02 mark of the opening period, the goal also made it a 1-0 Red Wings lead into the first intermission.

In the second, McNinch’s first of the night and 15th of the year tied the game 1-1, on a one-timer from the mid-slot set up on a tee by a nifty pass out front from Florence, who forced a turnover down low to start the play.

McNinch then returned the favour, setting up Florence for his 14th, to make it 2-1 Stars just three minutes later. Florence’s tally came off a slick toe-drag play by McNinch to pull the puck around a sprawling Wings’ defenceman before finding Florence in front.

Still a one-goal game through two periods, at 2-1 North Stars heading into the second intermission, the proverbial dam would burst in the third as the Battlefords rattled off five straight to pull away on the night.

McNinch’s second of the evening and 16th of the year came just 13 seconds into the third on a wrister from the high slot, off another pass by Florence to make it 3-1.

In addition to an absundance of goals on the night, Stars’ defenceman, Easton Rask and Red Wings’ forward, Matthew Reidy also dropped the gloves in the third period for a bout of the fisticuffs. (Twitter/MartyMartyPxP1)

Southgate’s team-leading 20th then stretched the lead to 4-1 on another one-time shot from point-blank range, this time set up on a platter by Colby Bear, after the latter forced a turnover high in the zone to keep the pressure on.

Southgate then found Bear for a one-time blast of his own from just above the hash marks, with seven minutes to go in the third. For Bear, the 5-1 goal marked his eighth of the season.

Emmett Wurst’s 11th of the year made it 6-1 with just two and a half to go in the third period, off the deflection of a Matthew Henry shot from the point; before Prymak’s eighth capped the night’s action in the final seconds on another tip in front – this time deflecting Sam Witt’s shot from the blue line.

With the win, the Stars improve to 27-13-6 on the year, and now hold sole possession of fourth overall in the league standings with 60 points. The Stars will now look to cap their road swing with a third straight win Thursday night, as the team will play the Notre Dame Hounds in Wilcox.

The NAPA Auto Parts North Stars North Stars Hockey Broadcast will be available Thursday on 1050 CJNB. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 8 p.m., with puck drop to follow at 8:30 p.m.
