Broncos clip Kindersley in 7-1 win at packed EPA barn

The Humboldt Broncos maintained some important ground on Monday afternoon as they beat the Kindersley Klippers in front of a 1,600 people crowd at the Elgar Petersen Arena (EPA).

Assistant coach, Carter Hansen, told northeastNOW the Broncos did take advantage of some opportunities in the 7-1 win, especially with three power play goals in quick succession in the third.

With only three weeks left of the regular season, Hansen said, finding those opportunities are going to be huge going into the playoffs.

Currently the Broncos are working with a 20 per cent success rate on the power play while Flin Flon Bombers is topping the league at 23 per cent. On the penalty kill the Broncos are seeing more success at nearly 91 per cent. With just .2 per cent separating them, the Estevan Bruins are doing slightly better as the season ticks down.

With tickets free for the annual Family Day game, fans did get a treat in the 7-1 win with the Broncos fighting off the Klippers and finding the back of the net with some beautiful goals.

Connor Casparie would kick it off for the Broncos midway through the first with his second of the season as he snuck one past Klipper’s goalie Matthew Pesenti.

Taking the feed from Reilly Mckinnon and Nicksha Eric, Cage Newans got his 13th of the season to continue the battle in the second period. A slap shot into the top shelf would earn Rhett Gibson his ninth before the Klippers answered back with Cash Arntsen slapping one clean past Broncos goalie Rayce Ramsay making it 3-1 for the Broncos going into the third.

Fortunately that would be all for the Klippers as some penalty trouble would open up the attack for the green and gold. Connor McGrath would beat Pesenti with the slap shot at the top of the circle followed closely by Alex Morozoff with a slap shot of his own at the blue line. With some fancy stick handling, Newans would find Braiden Koran to make it 6-1 less than six minutes into the third with all three goals finding the back of the net on the power play.

One more from Koran for his 25th of the season would end it as the buzzer sounded on the 7-1 win.

The power play was clicking, Newans told northeastNOW, after the game and the players did play the full 60 coming off the loss in Kindersley on Feb. 19.

The packed EPA made a difference for the players, he said.

“Saturday was a tough game, but we knew coming into today’s game, it was going to be a big crowd. Special day on Family Day, so you know, we had to kind of put on the show and I think we definitely did that.”

With only five games left in the regular season, only two games remain on home ice for the Broncos. Having that hometown crowd does help and they will have to take advantage, said Newans.

“Obviously it’s not the best always playing on the road, but whenever we’re at home, it’s always a good crowd. Best fans in the league here for sure so we just got to take advantage of it.”

With playoffs on the horizon, Hansen said they are going to have to win on the road no matter who they play.

“We got to do it the last three games before the regular season is over.”

With the return of Cianna Lieffers as head official, the Broncos also had an Olympian in the house. Lieffers recently returned from the Olympic Games in Beijing where she was part of the Canadian contingency of hockey officials. Besides her reffing abilities, Lieffers also wowed audiences when she took a stick to the face from United States forward Amanda Kessel in the Canada versus U.S. preliminary match. Lieffers was attended to by the Canadian trainer before returning to her post on the ice.

She was honoured by the Broncos before the game with an autographed jersey and a big welcome from the crowd.
