Mustangs looking for consistent efforts as playoff push continues

Feb 22, 2022 | 11:40 AM

Consistency will be key for the Melfort Mustangs as they head into their final eight games of the regular season.

The Mustangs are coming off a weekend that saw them defeat the Kindersley Klippers on Friday by a 5-1 score, but followed that up with a 2-1 overtime loss to the 11th-place Nipawin Hawks, an effort that the team was not happy with.

Captain Ben Tkachuk said that while Saturday’s effort wasn’t a good one, they did bring it on Friday and they need to find that effort again as they hit the road for a game against the Notre Dame Hounds on Tuesday, Feb. 22.

“I think it’s just about balance, and bringing 60 minutes,” Tkachuk said. “And if you’re not there, your linemates pick you up.”

In the month of February, the Mustangs are 1-2-2-1, with four of their five losses coming by just a single goal.

Tuesday will mark the fourth and final meeting between the Mustangs and the Hounds. Last time they met, it was a back and forth high scoring affair that saw Curtis Hammond score five goals for Melfort, including the overtime winner, in a 7-6 win. Melfort has won two of the last three meetings, but their only loss to the Hounds came back in October at the Duncan McNeill Arena in Wilcox.

Tkachuk said Notre Dame is a team that plays with lots of skill and speed.

“It’s just about defending, and taking advantage of the opportunities they give us,” he said.

The Hounds are in a dog fight for the eighth and final playoff spot as they currently sit one point behind the Kindersley Klippers for eighth with a 21-22-3-2 record on the year.

Melfort is 26-15-4-5 on the year, good enough for fifth place, just one point back of Battlefords for fourth and four points back of Flin Flon for third.

Tuesdays game can be heard on 105 CJVR with Mat Barrett. The pregame show begins at 7:45 p.m., with puck drop to follow at 8 p.m.
