Ice Wolves on the edge of securing playoff spot

According to La Ronge Ice Wolves head coach Kevin Kaminski, the team could need to secure at least three more wins to earn a spot in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League playoffs.

The regular season is winding down for the Ice Wolves with seven games left, including six home games. The team most recently fell 7-3 to the Estevan Bruins at the Mel Hegland Uniplex last night and will play the Bruins again tonight at the Mel.

The Bruins are currently the top ranked team in the league with a 40-9-4 record for 84 points. The Ice Wolves are in sixth place with a 26-21-4 record for 56 points.

“It’s not guaranteed yet,” Kaminski said of a playoff spot. “We still have some work to do. We need to at least have three more wins here unless we get some help with Kindersley or Notre Dame losing. Three wins would definitely clinch us a spot.”

After tonight’s home game against the Bruins, the Ice Wolves will host the Melfort Mustangs on Feb. 26, the Notre Dame Hounds on Feb. 27, the Melville Millionaires on March 2, the Mustangs again on March 2 and the Flin Flon Bombers on March 4. The last regular season game will be March 5 when the Ice Wolves travel to Flin Flon.

Kaminski believes the upcoming string of home games will be a huge benefit for his team.

“I really believe so. We know how we got to play at the Mel,” he said. “We’re in our own beds. We really got to focus and get rest, stay mentally and physically prepared for every game. We dug ourselves out of the hole, but we still have some meat left on the bone we need to take off to secure before the playoffs.”

Although there were several injuries throughout the season, Kaminski noted all players but Aaron Greyeyes should be ready for playoffs should they secure a spot.
