Schwab shutout headlines Stars 3-0 win over Wings

Feb 23, 2022 | 12:30 AM

Goaltender, Austin Schwab stopped all 24 shots he faced for his first career shutout, while the Battlefords North Stars fired 45 the other way, on their way to a 3-0 win over the visiting Weyburn Red Wings, Tuesday.

Stars’ forward, Dylan Esau added a pair of goals on the night, and Matthew Henry chipped in another, to lead the team offensively in the win.

Following a scoreless opening period, Esau’s first of the game and 14th of the year opened the scoring just 3:25 into the second. Zipping home a wrister in front for the tally, Esau’s marker was his second in his last three games with the man advantage, while coming on the team’s lone power play of the night.

Matthew Henry’s fourth made it 2-0 Battlefords just 3:23 into the third period, off a nice cycle play by the Stars’ fourth line. Ty Bahm dropped the puck behind the net to Evan Waldie, who then quickly moved it on to Henry in front for the insurance goal.

In the final minute of the third, with the Wings’ net empty late, Esau’s second of the night came on a mix of heady and team-oriented play. After Emmett Wurst made the initial pay to chop the puck past a pinching defenceman and into open ice, Steven Kesslering raced onto it, to begin carrying down ice.

Rather than shoot for the empty cage himself, Kesslering then found a streaking Esau cutting into the zone who he hit with a pass to bury it, for his second of the night and 15th of the year, to make it 3-0 Stars the final.

With the victory, the Stars have now won four of their last five games, and improve to 29-14-6 on the year. With 64 points, the team remain fourth overall in the league standings, though they now sit just a single point back of Flin Flon for third, while holding a game in-hand.
