Stars top Wings 4-1 for third straight

The Battlefords North Stars completed their back-to-back sweep of Weyburn Wednesday, with a 4-1 win over the Red Wings in North Battleford.

Stars forward, Dylan Esau continued his tear of late, leading the way with a goal and three assists, while Steven Kesslering, Sam Witt, and Tanner Gold also scored a goal each for the Battlefords and Lowen Kenyon stopped 25 of 26 Weyburn shots for the win.

Kesslering’s 20th of the season opened the scoring for the Stars midway through the first. Coming shorthanded off a two-on-one rush, Esau found Kesslering alone against the goalie with a behind the back pass, the winger then sniped off-the-post and-in from in front to make it 1-0 and pull into a tie for the team lead in goals this year.

The North Stars continued to make their special teams play count, adding a power play goal in the final half-minute of the first, as Witt snapped home a seeing-eye shot from the point to make it 2-0 on his fifth of the year.

Following a scoreless middle period, Kirk Mullen scored just 6:29 into the third, to cut his team’s deficit to 2-1, on his eighth of the season. The goal also served as his team’s first in their last four games.

Esau converted for a tap-in off a Kesslering net-drive to make it 3-1 Stars, re-establishing the team’s insurance marker with his 16th of the season, before Tanner Gold added his second of the year as well to stretch the lead to 4-1 on another wrister through traffic that found pay dirt.

With the victory, the Stars have now won three straight, and improve to 30-14-6 on the season. The team’s 66 points sit just a single back of Flin Flon, who also won Wednesday, defeating Nipawin 6-2; though the Stars still hold a game in-hand.

The team will return to action this Saturday at home against second-place, Humboldt. The NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast will be available on 1050 CJNB, with the Ultra Print Pregame Show at 7 p.m., and puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
