Humboldt parents will soon have access to a new family resource center

Two local organizations have teamed up to provide families in the Humboldt area with vital resources for young children.

Humboldt Early Years Family Resource Center is being facilitated through the early year branch of the Ministry of Education, while Horizon School Division is the operating partner and PARTNERS Family Services are the staffing partners.

Katherine Oviatt, superintendent of Learning for the Horizons School Division and lead for the Humboldt Early Years Family Resource Center Project told northeastNOW the program is aimed to give resources to at-risk children of vulnerable families.

“We really want to focus on families that sometimes fall through the cracks. So we’re talking about newcomers to Canada, EAL families, LGBTQ+ families, families in poverty and families that are on the poverty line.”

All families are welcome to use the program but Oviatt said the goal of the program is to ensure vulnerable children have the opportunity to meet others as well as have access to services vital for healthy development.

“We found that there are several families that have children of need that just didn’t know how to access services.”

Resources can include but are not limited to speech-language pathologists in the region, autism services and early childhood intervention programming.

“We can help support them and help with referrals. We can also bring those services to the centre. If travel is a barrier, we’re able to facilitate that through the centre.”

The program is aimed to help children aged zero to five, and also helps with prenatal care and planning for expecting parents.

Oviatt explains that this program is of no cost to those who use it.

“We want to make sure that it isn’t a burden in any way for any families to come and to partake in our programs and to just enjoy the centre.”

The program’s official opening is March 3 and the centre is hoping to start helping families shortly after.
