Prairie Hope Wellness is helping single mothers in the community gain transportation to the grocery store, appointments and other vital services.

The organization is hosting a fundraiser with all proceeds going to purchase taxi vouchers that will be given to women struggling to get to and from essential services.

Mike Lang, a mental health counsellor, told northeastNOW that this is an issue social workers and counsellors run into frequently.

“It might be weather conditions or might be having lots of kids to bring around with them to various things for moms and single parents in our community.”

This first annual fundraiser brings adults back to a childhood favourite, getting a surprise bag.

Surprise bags are compiled of items from six different local businesses. All items in the bags are a surprise but can contain snacks, health products and other items to relieve stress.

Each bag will be $25 but are valued at a minimum of $35. They can be picked up at the Prairie Hope Wellness office or arrangements can be made for pickup.

The goal for the bags is to provide single moms with at least one free ride during a hard time in hopes of reducing their stress and providing a much-needed break.

For those unfamiliar with Prairie Hope Wellness, Lang explains they provide counseling services for individuals, couples, families, kids and youth in the community.

“We offer a unique blend of education, training, and, and experience to just help individuals deal with stress and pressure to address the increasing mental health and emotional health struggles that are happening in our lives these days.”

Training courses in mental health first aid are also available with suicide prevention workshops such as ASIST and Safe Talk.

Lang said this project, along with everything they do, is about bringing communities together.

“This ultimately fosters a lot of community and a lot of connection. Which has been hard to come by these days.”
