A current Nipawin Hawk and former Melfort Mustang will continue his hockey career at Ohio University.

Christian Albertson has committed to the college hockey program for next season. The Hawks made the announcement on their social media channels Monday. Albertson, 20, said he is ecstatic to be furthering his playing career while getting an education.

“I am extremely excited,” he told northeastNOW. “I still don’t believe it’s happening right now. I still need to wrap my head around this.”

The Saskatoon product started his Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) career with the Mustangs playing 41 games during the 2019-20 season. Albertson had nine goals and seven assists during his rookie season and added another two goals in the playoffs that season. He was acquired by Nipawin and spent two years with the Hawks, including the COVID-19 shortened season. He has played 57 games in Nipawin collecting 13 goals and seven assists this season and leads the team in goals.

He said his goal was to play collegiate hockey ever since his first season of U-18.

“I worked for the last five or six years towards that goal and my work paid off,” he said.

The Ohio University Bobcats play in the American Collegiate Hockey Association. The club plays in the Division 1 and 2 levels of the Central States Collegiate Hockey League. According to the school’s website over 20,000 students were enrolled at the university located in Athens, Ohio. Albertson said after some discussions with the team he felt the school was the destination for him.

“I had a gut feeling when I was talking to the assistance coach. It felt right, they seemed to really want me. I did some research; the campus and school look beautiful. I just felt this is the right fit for me,” he said.

Albertson said he hasn’t chosen a major yet. For now, he will concentrate on the Hawks’ final four games, and his last sesaon playing junior hockey as Nipawin will not make the playoffs. Overall Albertson said he’s happy to have his plans laid out and couldn’t have done it without plenty of assistance along the way.

“There’s been a tonne of people that have helped me, more than I can count. I can’t give enough thanks and appreciation to everyone that’s help me succeed in my journey going down this path,” he said.

Albertson and the Hawks return to action Tuesday when Flin Flon visits the Centennial Arena. Faceoff is 7:30 p.m.
