The Melfort & District Museum will have a new piece of art to display in the spring.

Indigenous muralist Edward Stonestand painted a piece that will be installed on the outside of the Indigenous Peoples and Archaeology building.

Gailmarie Anderson, curator at the Melfort and District Museum told northeastNOW the mural holds a lot of meaning.

“We wanted the mural to depict the history of the relative that Indigenous people took to settle in this area from the very beginning.”

In the mural, there are arrowheads depicted along with tribal life. The artwork represents being a nomad, bison hunts and the way of life on the prairies.

“It is 48 feet long, I think. So it’s slated to be on the east side of the building. So it will really draw attention to the building and hopefully have a kind of an open door into the exhibit inside.”

Inside the building, the artifacts, logistics and archaeological items further explain what life was like for Indigenous people in Saskatchewan.

Although the exterior of the building now has an art piece, the interior is also adorned with Indigenous artists.

“Some of it from our original collection was from the Hrytzak Morgan family, and Isidore Morgan was an artist himself.”

For those who were not at the soft opening of the exhibit, Anderson said visitors should be prepared to be amazed.

“We now have three collections. We have thousands of articles, we have a lot of history,” Anderson explained. “We have numerous artwork and other things that depict the era. And I think people will be very impressed.”

For those wanting to attend the exhibit, the grand opening is on National Aboriginal Day on June 21, 2022.

Since the soft opening, the exhibit has added another archaeological collection bringing the total exhibits up to three.

“So we cover across northeast Saskatchewan from Yellow Creek over to Bjorkdale.”
