Hawks blanked by Bombers

The Nipawin Hawks were shutout 4-0 Tuesday at home against the Flin Flon Bombers in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) action.

The game capped the season series between the two rivals with the Bombers winning six of the eight games featuring the two SJHL clubs. The loss was also the Hawks fourth straight loss.

Flin Flon opened the scoring in the first period courtesy Jacob Vockler. Despite trailing 1-0 after the first period Nipawin was satisfied with the opening frame and outshot the Bombers 13-8. The good news ended there; the Bombers exploded for three more goals in the second period allowing them to coast to the win. Hawks forward Alex Johnson said the script was all too familiar from the Hawks’ season.

“We had plenty of shots on them, we pressured well in the offensive zone, we were really on them, but in the end, we couldn’t capitalize on our chances,” Johnson said.

Nipawin will miss the SJHL playoffs for the first time since the 2010-11 SJHL season. With three games left to play, including two against Melfort this weekend, Johnson said the team won’t give up.

“We’re putting everything into these games building for next year, creating a culture. We have a big rivalry with them [Melfort], we’re looking to take points from them and put a bitter taste in their mouths for next year,” he said.

Harmon Laser-Hume made 26 saves in the loss, Cal Schell picked up his seventh shutout of the season, that’s a new franchise high for the Bombers organization.

Melfort will visit the Centennial Arena on Friday, the season series finale will be at the Northern Lights Palace on Saturday. Both games begin at 7:30 p.m.
