One more win and one more game for Broncos as season draws to a close

With six players resting up this week, the Humboldt Broncos took a trip down the road to take on league rivals Notre Dame Hounds on Sunday afternoon.

The two-point win means a total 88 points currently for the green and gold as the season winds down in its last week of play.

With some teams already completing their season this week, a bit of shuffling in the standings means a more concrete picture of the league standings.

Thanks to a one-point, overtime loss against Weyburn, the Bruins have just so solidified first place in their last game of play with 91 points making them untouchable by the Broncos.

Even if Humboldt can secure a win on March 11 against the Kindersley Klippers they will still finish the season one point off the Bruins with 90 points.

The question remains of who the Broncos will play in the first round of playoffs with La Ronge and Yorkton the possible contenders.

With two games left to play, the Yorkton Terriers, currently in seventh place, do have a chance to overtake the La Ronge Ice Wolves to take sixth and they will need both wins to do it.

If Yorkton does finish their season tied in points, La Ronge still has the advantage with more wins under their belts.

Looking for their last win and getting ready for playoffs, Broncos head coach Scott Barney said they will be looking to remain consistent with their level of play and their habits.

“Obviously when playoffs start it’s a whole new season and there’ll be eight great teams in there and as you know, anybody can win so we’ll be ready at our best when opening faceoff drops.”

The Hounds opened up the scoring for the evening following a shot from the blue line by Jaryd Sych getting tipped in by Kevin Anderson two minutes into the first.

Broncos were quick to answer back six minutes later with Jared Kaplowitz grabbing a pass in the green and gold zone from Noah Barlage and taking it to Hounds goalie, Ryley Osland, with a quick shot from the point just after the blue line tying up the game. This would be Kaplowitz’s first goal in the green and gold jersey after joining the team late in the season.

Alec Saretzky would take the back hand from Perkins and fire it past two defenders to find the back of the Hounds net making it 2-1 going into the second.

Lucas Ceccarelli would find Quinn Myles on the attack for his second goal of the season and the only goal of the second making it 3-1 as the both teams continued to battle into the third.

With Osland out in the dying minutes of the game, Elliot Dutil would beat out Dyke on the breakaway with Connor Nolan to get the Hounds within striking distance. However, that would be all as an empty netter from Zielke with help from Ceccarelli would give the Broncos the win.

Dyke would pick up his fourth win in net saving 25 of Notre Dame’s 27 shots on goal.

The Broncos will wrap up their season on March 11 in Kindersley as they take on the Klippers for the last time this season.
