Stars host Hawks for Tuesday night showdown

Mar 8, 2022 | 1:05 PM

With just four games to go on their regular season schedule, the Battlefords North Stars will welcome the Nipawin Hawks to town Tuesday, for their second last home game ahead of the playoffs.

The North Stars (32-16-6) sit fifth overall of the league standings heading into play with 70 points. Fighting for the third seed overall heading into the post-season, the team are just a single point back of fourth place, Flin Flon (71 points) and three back of third-place, Melfort (73 points) while holding a game in-hand on the Bombers and two on the Mustangs.

The Stars will be looking to get back on the winning track coming off a 4-2 loss to Kindersley Saturday, and could end up as high as fourth overall by night’s end, as Melfort and Flin Flon will play each other in other action around the SJHL.

The Hawks (17-34-6) are 11th of the league’s 12 teams overall, with 40 points on the year. However, the team will be motivated to end their season on a positive note, looking to snap a six-game losing skid in what will be their final game of the year.

Head coach of the North Stars, Brayden Klimosko said his team will need to be ready for a tough test from a determined Hawks team.

“It’s their last game so they’re going to leave everything out on the line and they’re going to play as hard as they can to try to win a hockey game, so if we don’t match that we’re going to struggle,” Klimosko said. “They beat us once before and they’re going to be ready to play tonight, so we have to do the same.”

Up front, the North Stars will receive a boost as captain Ryland McNinch returns to the lineup for the first time since Feb. 20 after being sidelined the last six games due to injury. He will line up between Jake Southgate and Keiton Klein within the top six upon his return.

The NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast will be available on 1050 CJNB, with the Ultra Print Pregame Show at 7 p.m. and puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
