New restaurant open in La Ronge bringing flavours of India

Residents of the tri-communities can now enjoy a taste of India without leaving town as a new restaurant opens Friday in La Ronge.

Lavish Pizza Family Restaurant is owned by Akil Bhavnagri who spent the last eight months getting ready for today. He explained his business offers a fusion of Canadian and Indian cuisine, noting the spiciness has been scaled down to better suit local palates.

“We will try to maintain the taste, the cleanliness, quality and quantity,” Bhavnagri said. “If anything doesn’t work, we apologize for that too.”

The menu includes a create-your-own pizza section where customers can pick and choose which toppings they’d like on their pizza. There’s also burgers, burritos, salads and more.

There are four Indian items on the menu such as butter chicken, chicken masala, paneer butter masala and paneer tikka masala, all of which come with rice.

Bhavnagri was originally planning to open the restaurant in October 2021, but that date was pushed back due the pandemic and supply chain issues.

“Every time we were ordering something for delivery it was delayed by two or three months,” he said.

Bhavnagri moved to La Ronge from Regina about 18 months ago and he’s currently employed with Conexus. When he moved to the tri-communities, he noticed there was a need for more restaurants.

Lavish Pizza Family Restaurant will be open for limited hours temporarily as staff become trained and comfortable with their roles. It’s also only take-out at the moment, but Bhavnagri wants to implement dine-in as soon as possible.

He envisions regular hours will be from 11 a.m. to 9 or 10 p.m. Hours on Friday, March 11 are 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
