North Stars looking to wrap up regular season in third place, take on Hounds in Wilcox

Mar 14, 2022 | 2:44 PM

The Battlefords North Stars are closing out their regular season tonight against the Notre Dame Hounds in Wilcox, and at least three other teams will look on with post-season-related interest.

Should the North Stars win, or lose in overtime or a shootout, they will leapfrog the Melfort Mustangs and take over third place in the final SJHL standings. The North Stars would then matchup against the sixth-place Yorkton Terries. However, if the North Stars fall in regulation, they will remain in fourth place and play the fifth-place Flin Flon Bombers.

The result won’t change the Hounds’ standings. Regardless of what happens, they will face the first-place Estevan Bruins in the first round.

The Hounds will be looking to shake a three-game losing skid on Monday, while the North Stars will be looking for their fourth straight victory.

North Stars’ goaltender Austin Schwab has won all three of those games, surrendering just four goals in that span. He’ll get the nod once again to close out the regular season. Bradley Blake has four goals and five points in his last three games. Holden Doell will return to the lineup after being sidelined for 12 games with an upper-body injury, and will play alongside Zane Florence and captain Ryland McNinch.

The main man on the Hounds the North Stars will need to keep an eye on is captain Kevin Anderson, who was named as a Gongshow Gear CJHL Star for February and led the SJHL in scoring that month. Throughout the season, Anderson has 28 goals and 77 points — good for second in the league. Elliot Dutil is also second in the league in goals with 36.

The NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast will be available on 1050 CJNB, with the Ultra Print Pregame Show at 7:15 p.m., and puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m.
