Tisdale takes bronze in High School Curling Championships

Tisdale high school took home a provincial medal for curling this past weekend and is already talking about taking gold next year.

Tisdale Middle & Secondary School’s mixed curling team attended the Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association (SHSAA) Provincial Curling Championships where they took home bronze.

Sharolyn Simoneau, coach of the high school curling team, told northeastNOW the team breezed through districts, regionals and the round-robin pool play at provincials undefeated.

“Unfortunately, we weren’t as sharp as we usually are and Canora was on their game.”

Tisdale lost 3-7 to Canora but faced Lampman for the bronze match and with a 7-5 win, the team brought home a winning banner for the northeast.

“Bringing home a bronze medal to our school is just such an honour,” Simoneau added. “The exciting thing is this team is all in Grade 11. So we get another kick at it next year.”

This team has been together since Grade nine but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they were unable to play together last year.

The mixed team is not the only strong competitor at the school. A group of grade nine girls won their junior district competition this year.

“They will be moving up next year to senior. I’m hoping to have a girls team, a boys team as well as a mixed team. Lots of curling action next year.”

As restrictions are now lifted across the province, Simoneau encourages past, present and aspiring athletes to get passionate about the sport.

“We’ve had a strong junior program in the past. Unfortunately, since COVID happened it kind of went by the wayside.”

Simoneau wants to thank the parents and supporters of the team for making this season possible.

“It’s just nice to see kids passionate about getting back out there and competing.”
