La Ronge RCMP have arrested a man who threatened to shoot people at the La Ronge Health Centre.

According to an RCMP media release, on March 16 shortly before 8:00 p.m., police received a report of an unknown male who entered the La Ronge Health Centre, said they had a firearm and were going to shoot people and wanted officers there.

Police were in the vicinity and responded immediately, but when officers arrived, the adult male fled on foot. Officers followed him down a trail beside the hospital and the man turned and ran back towards the officers.

The officers spoke to the distressed man while he paced and said he was going to shoot police. The release noted officers encouraged him to show his concealed hands. The man then again ran down a wooded trail and officers lost sight of him in the darkness.

While officers searched for him and continued their investigation, they received a new report of a distraught male at the Mel Hegland Uniplex. Officers responded and confirmed it was the same individual. They also learned the man was not holding a weapon and, by using de-escalation techniques, arrested him without further incident.

“A further search of the man and the immediate area resulted in no weapons being located,” said La Ronge Staff Sgt. Dean Bridle. “The officers who responded to this potentially dangerous call for service recognized communication was key in this circumstance. De-escalating a stressful situation – both for the man and the officers involved – resulted in a safe conclusion to this incident.”

The man is charged with one count of uttering threats, but the RCMP will not be releasing any identifying information about him.
