Prairie Women on Snowmobiles are gearing up for their final ride as a group.

The group was created with the mission to bring attention to Breast Cancer in addition to raising funds for research and equipment needs.

President Kelly Rea told northeastNOW the decision to dissolve the organization came with a heavy heart.

“It was finally decided at the annual general meeting by the membership that attended due to the lack of people being involved.”

Rea explains there has been a steady decline in members since 2014 so the decision was inevitable.

“Twenty-two years is a long time to be doing such a fundraising strategy and it was successful. It is very sad to see Prairie Women on Snowmobiles have to dissolve this way, but it has lived out its course.”

Since the launch of the organization, nearly $4 million has been donated to the Canadian Cancer Society. Despite the group dissolving, Rea said the group of women involved won’t stop donating until a cure is found.

“They also won’t stop caring. So they will find other avenues to get their money to this cause. It’s been a great honour to be part of this organization.”

In total, 164 women have gone to 198 communities to raise funds and share life-saving tips.

“(They) got the message out there that early detection is your best chance of surviving this dreadful disease.”

Members have also offered support to survivors and those going through treatment with comfort quilts and pinning ceremonies.

The final ride will take place at the Bella Vista in Humboldt on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. with a banquet and the ride starting at 10:30 p.m.

At the event, Rea said the focus will be on celebrating women who have united in support of people who are experiencing one of the most difficult times in their lives.

“They all should be extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished and I’d like to send out the biggest thank you to anyone who has ever had a hand in making us the success that we were.”
