The Melfort Mustangs have taken a 1-0 series lead over the Yorkton Terriers in their SJHL Quarter-Final series.

The Mustangs downed the Terriers 4-1 at the Northern Lights Palace behind two goals from Clarke Huxley and 27 saves from goalie Joel Favreau.

“It was definitely big, get the first one under our belt,” Huxley said. “But it’s a long series, long playoff run so we’ve got to keep a level head and keep it going into tomorrow.”

From the word “Go”, Melfort took control of game one, outshooting Yorkton 14-7 in the first period and getting a goal from Huxley and a late goal from Thomas Moore.

That was followed by an early second-period goal by Zac Somers before Yorkton scored to make it 3-1 thanks to Tanner Sklaruk. Clarke Huxley would add a shorthanded goal midway through the second period, restoring the three goal lead for good.

Huxley said while the first two periods were dominant, they need to make sure they don’t let off the gas.

“We had a good start, good first and second,” he said. “We laid off a bit in the third, but we got the job done. So we’ve got to play a full 60 and keep it going into tomorrow.”

Game two of the best-of-seven goes on Saturday back in Melfort with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
