Series tied at one as Broncos drop game two to Ice Wolves

While the crowd was raising the roof at the Elgar Petersen Arena on Saturday night, it took a while before anyone got some points on the board in game two of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League playoffs.

Unfortunately, it would not be the Broncos finding the back of the net as they lost 2-0 against the La Ronge Ice Wolves.

Tensions were high, especially after a win on home ice kicked off the series the night before in a 6-4 win for the Broncos.

While the loss was not the outcome the Broncos wanted, assistant coach Carter Hansen told northeastNOW that is the beauty of a seven-game series.

“Some nights it’s yours, some nights it’s theirs, and I think we just got to regroup and now get ready for game three.”

While the Ice Wolves finished the season in seventh place, they finished the season strong with a top-three performance in the last half of the season, said Hansen. The Broncos have not been taking them lightly and they know the Ice Wolves can win some games against them. They are going to have to be ready in the next few games of whatever La Ronge can throw their way.

The Ice Wolves play a real physical game, said Hansen, and the players know this and need to rise to their level.

“We’re more than capable of sticking up for ourselves too playing in that sort of game, but we just got to learn to stay out of the box because it’s not working in our favor that way.”

However, some penalty trouble did open things up for the Ice Wolves in the second period with a shot from Nate Looft rebounding off Nicksha Eric’s skate and past Broncos goalie Rayce Ramsay. A little over a minute later a pass from Brandon Della Paolera to Ethan Strik on the power play would make it 2-0 for the Ice Wolves with a beautiful shot from the point finding its way over Ramsay’s glove.

By the time the buzzer sounded the teams would be fairly evenly matched in chances on goal with Ramsay stopping 24 out of 26 shots from La Ronge and Ice Wolves goalie Xavier Cannon stopping all 28 shots the Broncos fired his way.

Ramsay told northeastNOW discipline is going to have to be the focus moving forward in the series.

“We got to be able to control our emotions a bit better in game three, but it’s not the end of the world. We’ll come back and we’ll have a better game.”

Having played twice at the Mel Hegland Arena, and winning both games, during the regular season, Ramsay said they know what it feels like to win in the small arena in front of a La Ronge crowd.

“I think we just have to be able to feed off that energy that the fans are giving them and just take it and control our emotions, but you know, use it to our advantage and just go play hard, go play Broncos hockey for 60 minutes.”

With the series now tied at a game apiece, round one continues in La Ronge on Tuesday and Wednesday with game five coming back to Humboldt on March 25. Games six and seventh are also scheduled for March 27 in La Ronge and March 29 in Humboldt if needed.
