The John Paul II Collegiate senior boys basketball team took home a gold medal over the weekend at regionals in their home gym.

Defeating Nipawin in their opening game 104-36 Friday, and Moose Jaw Vanier Saturday 90-58, head coach, Shalen Fox said it’s been something special to see how the team has come together to peak at the right time.

“We got the number four seed heading into the weekend, and the boys have really been playing well at the right time which is what every coach wants,” he said. “Everyone is back healthy and really playing well as our depth is really showing.”

Fox said the team has been competitive all season despite facing a number of injuries. The adversity has only made the team stronger in the long run.

“We earned a lot of second and third-place finishes this year and played in a lot of competitive games,” Fox said. “When we got bit by the injury bug a couple of weeks ago, [other] players really stepped up. So now with those players back we really have strong depth that allows us to stay fresh and play fast all game, which has been key and fun to watch.”

The senior boys will now advance to HOOPLA in Moose Jaw this Friday and Saturday, Mar. 25-26, which will serve as their provincials.

Also in action over the weekend, the Crusaders senior girls finished second, falling in the regional final to the hosts at Moose Jaw Central. The girls finished the season 16-6.
