Spring arrives in La Ronge but temperature expected to dip below -20 C this week

Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Terri Lang said even though Sunday was the first day of spring, it won’t feel that way by Friday.

“It’s trying, but it won’t feel like spring at the end of the week with the temperatures reaching towards -20 C,” she said. “I think it’s going to be a slow warm up for this spring. All of the longer-range forecasts are calling for a bit of a cooler spring.”

Last week in La Ronge was rather warm for this time of year, but Lang noted none of those days were record breaking. On March 18, it was 8.7 C with a record of 12.4 from 2021, while March 19 was 5.6 C (15.3 C from 2021) and March 20 was 6.8 C (17.5 C from 2019). The average high for this time of year is 0 C with a low of -14 C.

A low-pressure system then began moving through the central region of Saskatchewan on Sunday, which brought with it an estimated seven centimetres of snow.

“As the weather system pulls out, it’s going to continue to bring a rain/snow mix, but the temperatures will start cooling off behind it,” Lang said. “It will generally go from basically a light snow, and then it will ease up and get cooler and we will have a little bit of cold temperatures for a couple of days and then it will warm up again.”

The forecast for this week calls for a mix of rain and snow for Monday with a high of 3 C and a low of -3 C. It will reach a high of 9 C on Wednesday before cooler temperatures arrive. Thursday is forecasted to be 1 C during the day and -16 C at night, while Friday will have a high of -10 C and a low of -22 C.

“There’s a few more nice days coming along and then we will see a little bit of a cool off because another Arctic high pressure area is going to sag down later in the week,” Lang said. “It will feel like a bit of a shocker after these really warm days.”

The amount of snow in La Ronge remains high for this time of year and is well-above to 30-year average.
