Carpenter High School girls basketball team is off to Hoopla 2022.

The third ranked Spartans hosted 4A Regionals over the weekend in Meadow Lake, rising to the occasion in a gold medal victory in front of a rowdy home crowd. In the final, Carpenter took down Vanier High School out of Moose Jaw 62-54 to book their first provincial ticket since 2013.

Head coach Kendra Paramchuk told meadowlakeNOW she was very pleased with her team’s performance, as well as the support of the fans. Carpenter dominated Nipwin in the semi-final 93-10 and never trailed at point during the weekend, giving their supporters plenty to cheer for.

“We were very pleased with the amount of people that supported us, we don’t normally get to play in front of that kind of support,” Paramchuk said.

A key to the Spartans success this year has been their depth, with a mixture of grades and skill sets playing important roles. Paramchuk said this has allowed them to overwhelm teams.

“We’ve got 12 girls and have basically played five-on, five-off all year, which is very nice to have as a coach,” she said. “We’ve got speed, youth and a good group of girls, who are excited and deserve to be at provincials.”

With only three seniors leaving the program, Paramchuck is optimistic about their chances for not only next year, but several years. In addition to the returning players, there are several girls competing at the middle school level that show promise.

“There was a pretty good battle in the city championship this year,” Paramchuk said. “The future of girls basketball looking very bright. We’ve got exciting times ahead.”

However, the immediate future is focused on this weekend in Melfort. In the semi-finals, the Spartans will face the hosts, who are ranked second in the province. Carpenter has played Melfort three times this year, winning one of those matchups.

While the task is tall, Paramchuk is confident that her group’s depth and skill can get the job done.

“They have two skilled sisters that battle hard,” Paramchuk said. “If we block them out and we run the floor and push the ball, we’ll be fine.”

“If the girls play as well as they did this weekend, you’ll definitely see them in the gold medal game on Saturday.”

Tip-off for their semi-final matchup is at 8:00 p.m. on Friday. For more information, including live streaming links, go to the SHSAA website.
