Stars fall 3-1 in Game 5, now face must-win Sunday
Despite a strong push late in the game with the empty net and extra attacker on, the Battlefords North Stars fell 3-1 on home ice Friday night in North Battleford, in Game 5 of their first round best-of-seven series with the Flin Flon Bombers.
A 2-2 series heading into play, the Bombers’ victory gives them a 3-2 series lead heading back to Flin Flon Sunday for Game 6, in what now becomes a must-win for the North Stars, to extend the series.
Gabriel Shipper scored twice for the Bombers in the win, cashing in for his second of the playoffs midway through the first period to make it 1-0 Flin Flon at the end of the first, before also adding his third of the postseason with just over five minutes to go in the second, to make it 2-0 Bombers at the end of 40 minutes.
Brett Weischorster added his third in his last three games to make it a 3-0 lead just over five minutes into the third period, leading to a stretch midway through the frame – with about 10 minutes to go – where the Stars pulled their goalie during 4-on-4 play, in an attempt to spark some offense with the 5-on-4 skater advantage.
