Stars fall 3-1 in Game 5, now face must-win Sunday

Mar 26, 2022 | 12:17 AM

Despite a strong push late in the game with the empty net and extra attacker on, the Battlefords North Stars fell 3-1 on home ice Friday night in North Battleford, in Game 5 of their first round best-of-seven series with the Flin Flon Bombers.

A 2-2 series heading into play, the Bombers’ victory gives them a 3-2 series lead heading back to Flin Flon Sunday for Game 6, in what now becomes a must-win for the North Stars, to extend the series.

Gabriel Shipper scored twice for the Bombers in the win, cashing in for his second of the playoffs midway through the first period to make it 1-0 Flin Flon at the end of the first, before also adding his third of the postseason with just over five minutes to go in the second, to make it 2-0 Bombers at the end of 40 minutes.

Brett Weischorster added his third in his last three games to make it a 3-0 lead just over five minutes into the third period, leading to a stretch midway through the frame – with about 10 minutes to go – where the Stars pulled their goalie during 4-on-4 play, in an attempt to spark some offense with the 5-on-4 skater advantage.

While the team wouldn’t score with the goalie out, they would off the momentum, soon after returning to 5-on-5.

Keiton Klein scored his first of the playoffs on a quick-snap release on a net-drive to make it 3-1, though that is as close as the Battlefords would come on the night; 3-1 Flin Flon the final.

The Stars will now get a day off tomorrow to travel to Flin Flon, before returning to action Sunday for Game 6 at the Whitney Forum.

The NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast will be available Sunday on 1050 CJNB an hour earlier than usual. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 6 p.m. with puck drop at 6:30 p.m. Saskatchewan time.

In other Game 5 action around the league, the (#6) Melfort Mustangs staved off elimination on home ice with a 5-1 win over (#6) Yorkton (YOR lead series 3-2); and (#2) Humboldt beat (#7) La Ronge 4-1 in Humboldt (HUM lead series 3-2).
