The Lakeland Rustlers and Maidstone’s Alana Olson didn’t complete their undefeated season, but still managed to end on a high note.

The top ranked team in the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) won bronze on Sunday at the Women’s Basketball National Championship in Nanaimo, B.C. After suffering their only loss of the season on Day 1, the Rustlers were able to take advantage of the second-chance format of the tournament to still come away with a medal, defeating second ranked Ch. Saint-Lambert Cavaliers from Quebec 86-73 in the bronze game.

Olson, who had a starring role in their league win on home court in Lloydminster a few weeks ago, remained a key part of the Rustlers success on both ends of the floor throughout the weekend. Their task was made difficult after a heartbreaking 76-71 loss against the host Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners in the quarterfinals. The Mariners had also gone undefeated and were ranked ahead of Lakeland all season, until they were upset in their league final a few weeks before hosting nationals.

Despite been shorthanded due to multiple injuries, the Rustlers responded well for the rest of the tournament, winning 68-55 over Humber College out of Ontario and 75-53 against the MSVU Mystics from Halifax, N.S., prior to the bronze medal game. The NAIT Ooks of Edmonton, who Lakeland had dominated all season long, defeated VIU in overtime in the gold medal game.

Olson is one of six players from the 2020 ACAC championship squad that returned to win conference gold and national bronze this season. She’s in her third year of school, but will still have three years of athletic eligibility after the 2021 season was cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.
