Feds provide funding for much-needed roof replacement at Melfort library

The Melfort Public Library will soon have a new roof thanks to funding from the federal government.

Just over $291,000 is being provided by the government through PrairiesCan and will help with the project that will remove the existing roof and replace it with a highly efficient LEED certified roof system, as well as the installation of a new energy-efficient heating and cooling rooftop unit.

“The funds are being used to upgrade a key community space and will ensure residents of all ages will benefit from the library’s services and programs for years to come,” said Mayor Glenn George.

One-quarter of the costs will come from the City of Melfort’s capital budget, the remaining costs will be funded through the Canada Community Revitalization Fund (CCRF) which helps communities rebound from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Canada Community Revitalization Fund is making investments to revitalize public gathering spaces, and our government is proud to help support the well-being of Melfort residents by upgrading and extending the life of this facility,” said Daniel Vandal, Minister for PrairiesCan.

City council has had the roof replacement on its capital budget priorities since 2016.

Last November, council discussed a pre-commitment of $85,000 to repair a portion of the library roof.

As part of its 2022 capital budget, the city has set aside $200,000 to repair the roof of the library. Funding for the project will come from an All-City Facilities reserve.

The city said this issue is of high priority due to the continued damage to the roof which, if left unresolved, will compromise the structure of the building.

Work on the roof replacement is already underway and is expected to finish later this year.
