Broncos prepare for bout with Bombers for SJHL round two

Round two for the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League playoffs will be underway on Friday after round one was officially decided Tuesday night.

With a 3-1 win in Melfort, the Yorkton Terriers are moving on to face the Estevan Bruins, while this means the Flin Flon Bombers and Humboldt Broncos will go head to head in the semifinals.

With game one tomorrow at the Elgar Petersen Arena, head coach Scott Barney, told northeastNOW they are about equal footing while he is expecting a strong match up.

“They’re a big, strong team with all the success they had this year. Obviously about Christmastime to the end of the year we’re kind of equal in the records.”

Even with some injury trouble during the regular season, they’ve always been ready to go, especially with a strong goalie in Cal Schell, a lot of depth and a mobile backend, said Barney.

The Bombers overtook the Battlefords North Stars in six games with 22 total goals to Battlefords 19.

Looking back at the regular season, the Broncos and Bombers split two home and home series with the Bombers offering up a rare loss at the Elgar Petersen Arena for the green and gold. During that time the Bombers out scored the Broncos 16 goals to 14 during those regular season matches. However, the teams haven’t met since the beginning of December.

This will be the second time the Broncos are meeting teams from the Sherwood Division.

Following a round one win against the La Ronge Ice Wolves, once again the Broncos will be dealing with a very physical team with a smaller arena and a passionate crowd, said Barney.

Obviously the road is also going to be a factor for both teams as it is a 6.5 hour drive one way between Flin Flon and Humboldt.

That is no excuse, said Barney, the boys have to be well rested and ready to play whether they are at home or at the Whitney Forum.

Round two starts off at the Elgar Petersen Arena with game one on April 1 and game two on April 2.

The Broncos will then hit the road with games three and four in Flin Flon on April 8 and April 9. Games five and six will then be split between the two teams with Humboldt hosting on April 12 and Flin Flon hosting on April 15.

In the meantime, Estevan and Yorkton will face off in a similar schedule also starting this weekend.
