Meadow Lake searching for new city engineer

The City of Meadow Lake is looking for a new city engineer.

Following the resignation of the previous engineer in late February, the City is now conducting a search to find the right replacement. Mayor Merlin Seymour told meadowlakeNOW the employment period this time around had been quite short.

“There were circumstances beyond our control and things did not work out,” he said.

City Manager Diana Burton stated in Administration’s Operational Overview Report she has been canvassing other municipalities and engineering firms for possible candidates. Seymour said council and administration will see where the search goes, but they do have some urgency and hope to fill a critical position within the community sooner rather than later.

“As far as infrastructure, paving and other repairs, engineers are very important,” he said.

Several projects in the coming months will require engineering work yet for the City. Meadow Lake’s asset management coordinator is working on an asset management plan for a sanitary sewer network, as well as a long-term financial plan for both roads and sewers. There’s also been coordination on drilling work.

The full report covered several other areas of information for the City, including finances, policing and ideas for the new arena, when work eventually commences. Seymour said they are still waiting for any word on their grant application.

“Hopefully it’s a positive that we get back, but we have not heard anything yet,” he said. “And hopefully it comes sooner than later.”

Since restrictions allowed for events back at the Aquatic Centre, the schedule has been almost completely booked every weekend, even some weekdays. However, several events were cancelled, due staff shortages caused by COVID-19.

Public works has also remained busy on snow and water removal efforts. Most of Meadow Lake is clear, but one area by KFC on 9th St. has required action, due to grease and fat causing a blockage at a sewer on the 200 block. The bylaw department is taking action, as dumping grease or fat down sewers drains is prohibited.

“Mostly a lot of preventative maintenance to make sure there isn’t a large effect of all the melting snow,” Seymour said.

The City will also have summer jobs available again for filing clerk positions, as part of a three-year records project. The positing of the executive assistant position also closes soon.
