There was a strong show of support for Krista Fox Friday when she arrived in the Battlefords after completing the first leg of her cross- Canada walk to raise awareness of the issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW).

Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs Inc. (BATC) held a barbecue fundraiser in the parking lot at Miwasin Kikinaw at 962 102 St. in North Battleford during the afternoon with proceeds benefitting the walk.

Krista Fox is walking throughout the country with Lindsey Bishop, the sister of Saskatoon woman Megan Gallagher, who has been missing since September 2020. Diane Morin, the mother of Ashley Morin of Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation, who has been missing from North Battleford since July 10, 2018, is also taking part. Lindsey’s husband Derek Bishop is participating as well. Fox said during the walk she is also remembering her grandson, Michael Roy, who was murdered in Saskatoon in 2020.

Fox was touched to see the welcome when they arrived in North Battleford.

“This will always be my home community,” she said. “To [see] so many people and such a huge support today was amazing…To pull into this parking lot today and to see everybody, the support and huge donations, it gives us that feeling of people believing in us, believing in what we are doing. It was amazing.”

During the fundraiser barbecue, BATC donated $10,000 to Krista Fox for the MMIW walk. The City of North Battleford stepped up to give $1,500, and the Town of Battleford is matching that amount. Poundmaker Cree Nation also made a donation.

Mosquito, Grizzly Bear’s Head, Lean Man First Nation Chief Tanya Aguilar-Antiman joined Fox, Bishop and Morin on part of the walk when they were in Alberta earlier.

Then, North Battleford Mayor David Gillan joined them in the walk from Paynton, Sask., towards the Battlefords Friday morning.

“I’m very happy to be able to come out today to support Krista, Lindsey and Diane on this special occasion, and [for] this very important issue,” Mayor Gillan said at the fundraiser Friday.

He said he took part in the walk himself also to “show support beyond words.”

“I feel very honoured to be able to walk today, and I’m glad that they invited me,” Gillan said.

Fox, Bishop and Morin started the walk in Victoria, B.C. in February, travelled through B.C. and Alberta, and crossed into Lloydminster on Tuesday. Starting Monday they will walk to Saskatoon and spend a couple days there so Lindsey Bishop can be with her family. Then, they will be back on the road again with plans to finish the walk on the East Coast around December.

Fox said Bishop and Morin have been by her side throughout this journey.

“There is no doubt we wouldn’t be as successful as we have been and will continue to be across Canada if it wasn’t for those two,” she said. “Diane is our support person… and Lindsey is my co-walker.. So this is not only Krista’s Kilometres, it is Krista’s and Lindsey’s Kilometres Across Canada.”

Fox added she hopes people and businesses will hang a symbolic red dress in their windows when the MMIW Walk passes through their community.

She said she is touched Gillan is also looking to have a similar display at city hall in the local community to show support.

“I’m out here, and I am hoping for change and that is change,” Fox said.
