Bike for Breakfast returns summer 2022

After a breakout fundraising campaign in 2021, Bike for Breakfast is back with ambitions to expand.

The cross-provincial cycling trip to garner funding in support of breakfast programs at schools in the greater Lloydminster region will now be open to members of the public. Organizers are looking for feedback as to how far residents would be willing to cycle in order to be a part of the trip.

Committe member Natalie Wiebe said the ride will have options ranging from 40 kilometres to more than 100 km. The goal remains the same as last year, $100,000 to serve schools in Lloydminster and surrounding areas.

“We are beyond thrilled with the success from last year and look forward to doing together as a community for our kids,” she said.

“We all have that soft spot in our hearts that says no kid should go hungry,” Committee member Nekky Jamal said. “We’re looking forward to the community coming through again because we want those kids to always have at least a meal a day.”

Bike for Breakfast is expanding to families in the Lloydminster area.

In giving different options for trip lengths for the public, the organizers are looking to involve families and kids. Jamal added it will be good to have some back up, as he and others that participated in last year’s bike ride haven’t kept in cycling shape since.

“We want to keep the ride a lot more local,” he said. “Anyone that really wants to jump on a bike and bike for breakfast, we want you to join us.”

“Also, we all got to get back in shape and get on our bikes.”

Last summer’s trip raised $300,000, which has funded 19,500 meals as of Feb. 11. Jamal said no one in the group was prepared for the success they would have.

“I thought a hundred thousand was a massive goal and to get to $300,000 proves how amazing our community is,” he said.

The timing for BFB coincides with an increasingly tough economy for Canadians, with prices of everyday essentials souring in the past few months.

“It’s nuts how expensive everything is getting,” Jamal said. “That just means we have to step our fundraising efforts up.”

“I’m excited to welcome as many people as possible.”
