North Battleford’s Jack Reid can add ‘national bronze medalist’ to his curling resume, following a third-place finish for Saskatchewan’s Team Bernath at the 2022 New Holland Canadian U-21 Curling Championships in Stratford, Ont.

Serving as lead on Team Bernath, along with skip Daymond Bernath, third Bryden Tessier, second David Baum, and alternate Jared Tessier, the team finished at the top of their pool through round-robin play, going 7-1 with a strong draw to the button total, to earn a bye to the semi-final.

And while Saskatchewan’s number one team would ultimately fall to the eventual champions in Ontario No. 1’s Landon Rooney 8-4, Reid and his teammates would rebound quickly to take the bronze that afternoon, topping No. 1 Manitoba’s Jordon McDonald 11-5, for the national bronze medal.

Reid said following the tournament, it served as a significant benchmark for the team, proving they can compete with the very best from around the country.

“It was an awesome experience; we played against some of the best quality teams we’ve played against yet, and just to know that we can compete with teams like that it’s just unreal,” Reid said. “While the week didn’t end quite how we wanted it to obviously, you have to be proud about a bronze medal.”

This year marked Team Bernath’s first together as currently constructed, after having all played on separate teams prior. The National bronze comes after seeing success earlier in the season as well at the 2021 World Juniors Qualifier in Saskatoon in November, where the team finished third in their pool, winning their quarterfinal against Alberta, on their way to another top-four finish at the tournament.

It is momentum the team hopes to continue into next season, as they advance from the junior to senior men’s ranks.

“Just to make it to two national events and have as much success as we were able to have together our first year as a team was super impressive for us,” Reid said. “We’re planning to play some men’s events next year as we’re aging out of juniors, so we’re looking to take on the men’s [ranks] together as a team.”
