Back-to-back provincial medals at Hoopla for the senior basketball teams are just the latest highlights for Unity Composite High School, in the midst of a season to remember for their athletics program.

Following a provincial silver medal for the cross country team to open the year, Unity High then sent three to golf provincials, while both the senior girls and boys volleyball teams punched their ticket to the provincial stage as well, where the boys took a silver medal.

The junior boys (silver) and junior girls (gold) also made the podium at their districts tournament to close the year, while the school football team made provincials as well despite having a new coaching staff, and the senior curling teams took gold at districts.

It is a year athletic director, Ken Parker called ‘one to remember.’

“This is my 27th year here and I’d have to look deep to find another year where we’ve had this level of success right from the opening sport,” Parker said. “We’re pretty deep right now, and we’ll see where things go, but it’s been really great to see.”

The Hoopla medals included a silver for the senior boys in Osler, finishing second to the hosts from Valley Christian Academy; and bronze for the senior girls, falling by single-digits to the eventual champions from St. Walburg, before bouncing back to beat Kamsack for bronze at their tournament in Indian Head.

Coach with the senior girls, and principal at the high school, Aaron Melnyk said after being unable to compete at the provincial level the last couple of years due to the pandemic, it was great to see the teams make the most of their return this year.

“Coming out of COVID, I’m not sure any program was really certain of where their team would be, come the end of the year and just having an almost entirely new group of athletes after a year and a portion off, there was a lot of unknowns,” Melnyk said. “But we worked hard, were pleased with our results and growth, and to make it into Hoopla and find that success was thrilling for the players, the school and the community.”

Melnyk said a lot of credit for the school’s success on the court – across the sports – comes down to a dedicated coaching staff who lay the foundation for a successful program.

“We really have extraordinary participation in our athletics program, and I think that’s just a testament to our coaching staff picking up right after COVID and just coming back even stronger,” he said. “They have provided lots of opportunities and we’re seeing great results. I’d have to go check the records but that’s as much [success] as we’ve probably ever accumulated in a single year.”

Next up on the athletic calendar, the Warriors’ badminton team will return to play this weekend, with track and field scheduled to start next month as well.
