Registration, tryouts underway for Meadow Lake Minor Ball

Apr 8, 2022 | 4:15 PM

It’s ball season in Meadow Lake.

As the weather transitions to spring, registrations are open for all minor baseball and softball teams in the area, with the provincial level teams starting or finishing their tryouts. All entries in the Turtle River Baseball League will start their competitions in May.

Regan Beck, President of Meadow Lake Minor Ball, said there are a few teams finalizing their coaches, but most are getting into the season for the provincial traveling teams. Each season there are four boys’ clubs in the 11-and-under (11U), 13U, 15U and 18U categories, and they are working to get their girls softball teams to that same output.

“We’re hoping to have a 11U softball team, but it is a work in progress,” Beck said.

Since introducing provincial level teams on the softball side, several athletes have already made an impression on the competition. Locals Kenzi Hildebrand and Makenna Dufresne placed second with a team that competed in a tournament in California last month with a winter fastpitch team and they were part of Meadow Lake’s 13U squad that won when the age category was 12U last year.

“Our girls were Northern Provincial champions, so a really good start to our foray into girls softball,” Beck said.

On the baseball side, they are expecting good things from all their clubs, including athletes from last year’s 13U AA Tier 3 champions.

“15U’s will be strong depending on where they are ranked,” Beck said. “We’re always competitive at the provincial level.”

Minor Ball is expecting between 300-350 registered athletes by the time May comes, on par with recent years. While the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions hasn’t resulted in a boom of players, Beck said it has made a difference in parents and coaches feeling secure about how the year will go.

“That the season will go off as it normally does, that there will be provincials at the end, that the dates will be normal,” he said. “Those were all things that were unknown last year.”

For those who still haven’t registered kids yet, Beck said get the process done now, before the last spots disappear.

“Once full we will be closing, so get registered if you don’t want to miss out.”

Information on registration, tryouts and more are available on the Meadow Lake Minor Ball Facebook page.
