Melfort council passes base tax and mill rate bylaws

Melfort City Council has passed two important bylaws following the approval of the 2022 budget earlier this year.

Councillors gave first, second, and final readings to the 2022 Base Tax and Mill Rate Bylaws.

Mayor Glenn George said all this did was confirm where the money from property tax increases would be coming from.

“It works out to a 4.16 per cent tax increase. What’s important is what we approved back in February.”

Council passed the budget during its February 14 meeting and needed to balance the books after being presented with a deficit of over $271,000. Council had approved slight changes to base taxes and mill rates as part of approving the budget.

“It’s a lot and inflation there is five or six, I think it’s going to be higher than that,” said George. “It’s not a good number but it’s as good as we could do.”

Property tax notices will soon be mailed out with payments due by June 30.
