City of NB offering free skating, shinny this week

The City of North Battleford is offering free public skating and family shinny this week at the Access Communications Centre.

Offered each day from Monday April 18 to Thursday, April 21, the public skating times will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m., while the family shinny will take place from 2 to 3 p.m.

Helmets are recommended for the public skating, but mandatory for all taking part in the afternoon shinny play, with no contact permitted within the hockey games.

Community programmer with the City of North Battleford, Siobhan Gormley said it’s all about offering another activity for youth and families to enjoy over the Easter break, while school is out.

“Whenever the kids are off school on a break, we try to add some public skating, and the last couple of years we’ve added the family shinny as well which has gone pretty well,” she said. “It’s kind of the last public skating and shinny sessions we will have for families, and we usually get anywhere from 10 to 50 people depending on the day.”

Gormley added the city is grateful for the community support which has allowed them to offer the ice time again this year for free.

“The family shinny and public skating are sponsored by service clubs in North Battleford, so it’s due to their generosity that we can offer these [ice times] at no charge,” she said.

Children taking part in this week’s skating activities must be accompanied by an adult, as the skating and shinny sessions are unsupervised.

The ice plant at the local rinks will be turned off for the spring, April 25.
