Driving conditions on Highway 9 near Hudson Bay currently ranked as some of worst in Saskatchewan

One of Saskatchewan’s worst roads appears to be south of the town of Hudson Bay.

That’s according to a campaign by CAA which aims to highlight the roads in the province that need to be fixed as soon as possible. People across the province can nominate a road and vote for which one they believe is in the worse shape.

Currently, number three on the list is Highway 9, specifically a section of the road around Hudson Bay.

Bert Dyck, the owner of Robert Dyck Trucking, told northeastNOW the road is barely driveable.

“They’ve patched it so many times that there are big ruts in the road, mostly potholes,” he said.

According to Floyd Hooge, co-owner of C & F Trucking Limited, the ruts and potholes appear over a 38 km section south of the town.

He noted his job forces him to drive on this road a lot and despite not causing any major damage it’s leaving a toll on his vehicle.

“You’re continually up and down… it’s just hard on stuff, hard on stuff.”

Once CAA’s campaign finishes in early May, the company plans on sending a top 10 list to the province, business leaders, and more in hopes of having these roads properly repaired.

Hooge added it would be quite the spectacle if crews started fixing the highway.

“I’ve lived there for 50 some years, I don’t know if that road has ever been fully paved over the original one.”

Highway 9, which goes as far south as the Saskatchewan-North Dakota border, has had work done over the years. However, most projects have happened around Yorkton as this is where the road experiences a big chunk of its traffic.

Meanwhile, topping the list is Mayfair Crescent in Regina.

Second is Saskatchewan 47 near Springside, while Moose Jaw is the only community to have two roads currently inside the top 10.

The final list will be announced by CAA on May 2, 2022.
